I joined STB as a Management Executive because I wanted a dynamic and stimulating career in the tourism industry, which I was especially interested in. Now, one year into the management training programme, my decision hasn’t disappointed me one bit! Unlike a career in engineering, which could be predictable, I now enjoy a comprehensive training ground that exposes me to different industries and develops me holistically in an environment that’s fun.
My current post as a Management Executive in the BTMICE division (with a mission to develop and grow existing conventions and exhibitions and attract and create new business events to reinforce Singapore’s reputation as a business and intellectual hub), in particular, has exposed me to extremely challenging but rewarding opportunities. Shortly after I moved to BTMICE following a 3-month stint at a Singapore Visitors Centre, I took on a creation project in the automotive cluster.
During my involvement, I worked closely with government agencies and key associations, travelled overseas to visit other tradeshows, and met the organiser to understand the needs of the industry. In the meanwhile, I have to keep abreast of industry information such as emerging trends and new booming sectors, new industry players, new partnerships forged in between industry and trade associations-all crucial to identifying opportunity for business events creation. All this while receiving on-the-job training and opportunities to further develop my business acumen, negotiation skills and creativity through external courses.
Another great aspect about working in STB is the people. I count myself extremely blessed to work with a team that is passionate, talented and who never fails to provide me with guidance, encouragement and friendship whether at work or play.
My exposure to the BTMICE industry has given me great networking opportunities and fuelled my personal development in various ways. I invite you to challenge yourself and see how the management trainee programme can transform you too.
