Out of all various FIREFLY scholarship agencies, I was attracted to STB the most because it combined my favourite disciplines of Geography and Economics, and offered a vibrant environment which I felt suited my outgoing personality.

The STB scholarship allowed me to understand the concerns of hospitality business, like reviewing business models, proposals, marketing and networking at the Cornell Hotel School.

Five years on and there’s not been a day when I’ve regretted my choice. From attractions, hotels, spas and nightspots, to travel agencies, airlines and now, integrated resorts, I’ve benefited from a wide exposure to different sectors. In fact, the best thing about working at STB is the amount of opportunities I get to advance myself both professionally and personally and also to make a difference.

During my five years here I have travelled extensively and been involved in tourism work in several countries. Most notable was my work with the International Group HQ, liasing with Japan and Korea and later gaining insights to the South Asia and Middle East markets when I was Area Director. One of my most unforgettable experiences was taking an 18-hour train ride from Delhi to Bodh Gaya to support the Minister of Trade and Industry’s visit to India. There, my team also managed to secure the filming of a major blockbuster Bollywood movie in Singapore. Working with Bollywood producers, actors and actresses, while still engaged in my core work of managing million-dollar advertising campaigns, was overwhelming and eye-opening all at once!

Once, I was even involved in the review of entertainment regulations, to allow both bar top dancing and the opportunity for bars to operate 24 hours! The Singapore Flyer is another highlight of my career, seeing it through the initial stages to the official unveiling of the project. I was also roped in to work on invitation of proposals from stakeholders for the Integrated Resorts on Sentosa and securing attractions like the Universal Studios and the world’s largest marine park on Sentosa.

All in all, working at STB has been extremely rewarding and enriching. The pace can be demanding at times but there’s never a dull moment and I’ve grown sharper and more creative for it!
