I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I first joined STB. The job is so different from my first job at Singapore Airlines Terminal Services (Catering), working in an in-flight kitchen.
In STB, the work is more strategic. The decisions we make in STB affects the country as a whole. Hence, the level of responsibility and satisfaction of a job in STB is vastly different.
I started out in the events marketing division for four years, and then moved onto a 5-year posting in China to head STB's offices there. Just recently, I completed my studies at NTU-Cornell, which was sponsored by the Board.
A typical work day will see me meeting with different industry players exploring ideas on what we can do to make Singapore a more exciting place to visit. I get to meet many different kinds of people from myriad backgrounds. From inspiring industry leaders to celebrities who work with us in promoting Singapore.
The satisfaction lies in seeing tourists coming to Singapore, having a good time and knowing that I have a part in making their stay a memorable one.
In STB, I was able to stretch my imagination, innovating events to make Singapore an exciting place to visit. For instance, I successfully led a team in transforming the Singapore Food Festival. We broke new grounds when we surprised many by bringing food events to unconventional places like the Zoo and Jurong BirdPark. The level of satisfaction and pride in seeing how these events took form and even went on to win international awards was like a dream come true. The feeling of seeing how visitors enjoyed and talked about these events is beyond anything that words could describe.
My dream has always been to work overseas and this was also fulfilled in STB when I was posted to China to head STB offices there. I loved the experience so much that I stayed in the posting for five years! The challenges of heading a regional office provided me good training in sharpening my leadership skills. I have emerged a more confident person.
After ten years of work life, the company helped me realise my Ivy League dream when I was offered a scholarship to pursue a Master of Management in Hospitality with Cornell Nanyang Institute last year. I shall be completing this course in June this year and am excited to see what other dreams may next be fulfilled in the company!
STB has helped turn my dreams into reality.
