It still feels like I just joined the company yesterday! Each day still presents an opportunity to learn something new. (Even though I have been with STB since 8 Sep 2003.)
I have always been in the lifestyle and creative industries. My first job was in advertising - servicing the STB account! It was a great learning experience as I was given the opportunity to work on STB's advertising & media plans for the Asian markets. The job gave me good exposure to the global media scene. As such, it was almost like 'coming home' when I joined STB in 2003! In my career, I have also had the opportunity to work for a global film distributor, a leading internet company as well as manage one of Singapore's foremost theatre companies.
The key difference between what I do now and what I had done in the past is the strategic nature of the work and the direct correlation between my work and the growth of Singapore. Undoubtedly, the subject matter of my work is fun but it has serious implications on job creation and economic growth. That in itself is extremely satisfying to know that my work has a direct and positive bearing on the place that I call home.
STB has played a very important role in my career development. It has stretched the way I think and fine-tuned the manner in which I approach challenging situations. I have also been given many great opportunities to taste new experiences and to constantly learn. Life is never stagnant in STB!
The opportunity to work on the Integrated Resorts and the F1 project has been fantastic and has exposed me to milestone transformational projects for the country opportunities I would never have had in another company. Being actively involved in the development of the Entertainment industry in the past 2 years has been extremely rewarding today, Singapore is widely regarded to be an exciting destination for clubbing, the arts and world-class music events.
Other memorable experiences include a business trip to the US to interest companies to invest in Singapore’s burgeoning tourism industry to a study stint at the famous tourism school, University of Hawaii, for a 3-week hospitality course. All in all, work has been fun, exciting and intellectually stimulating.
My days are filled with many meetings and brainstorming sessions with people from the industry as well as internal sessions with the team and management. The day could begin with an update and sharing session with the rest of the Directors from the Leisure Group, followed by an internal meeting with a member of my team on an upcoming event. Lunch could be with a business partner to view his new bar followed by a meeting with foreign investors interested in bringing in a new event concept into Singapore. The early evening is usually spent catching up with emails followed by an industry event in the evening. Like I said, things are never stagnant in STB!
I have always likened STB to the little red dot that is Singapore. Nothing is ever impossible. No idea is ever too big to consider. Once it sets its mind on achieving something, it will be done.
STB is a focused, driven and energetic organisation filled with great people with big hearts. Essentially, a fab place to live, work and play! ;P
