My role in my previous employment on both a ministry and another statutory board is quite similar to my current one: development and promotion of skilled manpower for the industry. In my current portfolio, it is targeted at the Tourism sector, which is filled with much excitement and buzz.
Areas that are different will be that I'm currently also involved in manpower policy planning. It involves a lot more complex understanding of the issues faced on the ground (by the industry and workers) and the concerns at the national level (GDP, demand and supply of skilled manpower etc).
It has been an exciting 6 months I have with STB so far.
We work closely with various government agencies and the industry, forecasting the manpower needs of the Tourism industry, planning and developing the supply of skilled manpower into the Tourism industry. I get to interact with people from various levels within the government agencies and the industry.
So far, I've been involved in the planning of policies to ensure that the Tourism industry gets the right type of workers at the right time. Moving forward, I’ll be involved in promoting Tourism careers to attract more people to join the vibrant and exciting Tourism industry.
Other than development of the industry, STB does not forget the development of its staff. STB ensured that its officers are equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge of the industry to help us with our work everyday.
We have been kept informed of the latest developments and plans for the tourism industry, for example the Singapore Flyer, the Integrated Resorts and the latest F1 project.
These new developments not only bring a lot of excitement, but also challenges in our work. We have to understand the manpower needs of these new Tourism products, and help plan and develop manpower for the new types of skills required for these projects.
I spend my days attending and preparing for meetings with both internal and external partners, researching and crunching numbers, planning how best to reach out to target audiences to attract them into the Tourism sector, writing content for website and collaterals, arranging with vendors on promotional activities.
STB: A place where we are serious about FUN!
Be where the buzz is, be in the Sector Development Group with me and get ready for the ride of your life!
