I began my career as a teacher in a junior college, and taught for 6+ years. I have always wanted to be a teacher and it was a natural choice for me. I enjoyed the interaction with students and an opportunity to share my knowledge and life experiences with others. Gradually, I was given more leadership opportunities in school and besides teaching, I also began to manage staff and spearhead a number of key initiatives. Through these new leadership opportunities, I discovered my passion went beyond teaching students.... it was the passion to serve and make a difference to society.
In a way, STB is not very different from teaching in a school. It is about the willingness to step forward and make that small contribution to make a difference to better the lives of others. A school teacher impacts thousands of students in his career... in STB, I have that opportunity to contribute to a population of 4 million... and I am proud of that.
Over the last 3 years, I held the market portfolios promoting education services for the South Asia and Middle East region, and subsequently the Greater China region. Hence, any strategic promotional events would involve trips to cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi (India), Dubai (UAE), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Muscat (Oman), Bahrain and in the Greater China region, cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Shengyang, Guangzhou, Taipei and Hong Kong.
These trips gave me extremely important insights about the needs and aspirations of our customers, and their perceptions of Singapore. Upon my return, it strengthened my ability to develop impactful marketing strategies. I was also privileged to be able to play the role of Liaison Officer to Chief Executive for his trip to Japan and corporate study trips to Berlin in Germany recently. These opportunities gave me a fresh perspective about the work we do in STB.
No one day in STB is the same actually. There are days where I would be out all day to supervise a film production for our latest video or days where I would go from one meeting to another consecutively... meeting various government agencies, media owners (such as network channels). There are days where I put my creative hat on (my favourite part) to brainstorm new ideas to brand Uniquely Singapore in a more compelling manner that would speak to our consumers more personally.
There are days where I also help mentor my other colleagues, sometimes I offer them an alternative viewpoint to help give a fresh perspective to a problem they face, there are days where I have the opportunity to listen to their own experiences. Even from some of our younger colleagues, there is always something I can learn from them. My best times are spent working with my fellow colleagues... I think team effort always produces the best results and I always look forward to such occasions.
The fact that we are right here, right now with the ability to play a part in shaping Singapore's tourism landscape and create jobs for more people and better the lives of Singaporeans continues to humble me.
